Astros nemesis Trevor Bauer wears ‘Free Joe Kelly’ cleats

Cincinnati Reds starter – and longtime Astros nemesis – Trevor Bauer showed his support for another Astros enemy Wednesday.

During pregame warmups before his start against the Royals, Bauer wore cleats that said “Free Joe Kelly” on one side and had an illustration of Kelly’s pouty face on the other. When he came out to ptich in the game, he was wearing a more standard pair of black-and-red cleats.

Kelly was dealt an eight-game suspension, later lowered to five on appeal, for intentionally throwing at the Astros’ Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa in July. Kelly further drew the Astros’ ire by yelling an expletive at Correa and making a comical sad face at the Astros as he walked off the field and both benches cleared.

Earlier Wednesday, Bauer posted a video of his cleats on Twitter and told ESPN that Major League Baseball told the Reds he could be ejected or disciplined in another way if he wore the cleats during a game.

MLB rules allow for players to wear cleats with messages or illustrations on them, but only if they’re approved by the league.

Bauer has long been a critic of the Astros, getting into a beef with Bregman the past couple seasons, and being one of the club’s harshest critics after they were caught illegally stealing signs in 2017 and 2018.
